Overview
1. What is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?
IUI is a fertility procedure that places washed and concentrated sperm directly into the uterus using a thin catheter, reducing the distance sperm must travel to reach the fallopian tubes and egg.
2. When is it Recommended?
IUI may be recommended for unexplained infertility, mild male-factor infertility, cervical-factor infertility, ovulation disorders or when donor sperm is being used, provided the fallopian tubes are appropriately assessed.
3. What Does the Treatment Involve?
The treatment may involve ovarian monitoring with ultrasound, with or without fertility medicines. Around ovulation, a semen sample is processed in the laboratory to concentrate motile sperm. The prepared sperm is then introduced into the uterus through a thin catheter.
4. How Long Does Treatment Take?
The IUI procedure itself usually takes approximately 5–10 minutes and generally does not require hospitalisation. The overall treatment cycle, including ovarian monitoring and ovulation timing, takes place over approximately one menstrual cycle.
5. What Are the Success Rates?
Success rates vary considerably according to age, ovarian reserve, sperm quality, cause of infertility and whether fertility medicines are used. IUI generally has a lower success rate per cycle than In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF).
6. What Are the Risks or Considerations?
IUI is generally a low-risk procedure. Possible effects include mild cramping, light spotting and, rarely, infection. When ovulation-stimulating medicines are used, there may be an increased risk of multiple pregnancy and ovarian hyperstimulation.
7. How Can Medavelle Help?
Medavelle can assist with fertility specialist coordination, medical-record review, fertility-clinic selection, treatment planning, medication guidance and international patient arrangements.
