Breast Conserving Surgery (BCS)

1. What is Breast Conserving Surgery?

Breast Conserving Surgery removes the breast tumour and a surrounding margin of tissue, while keeping the remaining breast tissue intact.

2. When is it Recommended?

It may be recommended for selected patients with early-stage breast cancer or certain other localised breast tumours, particularly when the tumour can be removed safely while preserving an acceptable breast shape.

3. What Symptoms May a Patient Notice?

Breast cancer may present as a new breast lump, change in breast shape or size, nipple discharge, nipple retraction or skin changes. Some cancers are detected through screening before symptoms appear.

4. What Does the Treatment Involve?

The surgeon removes the tumour with a margin of surrounding tissue. Sentinel lymph node biopsy or other lymph-node surgery may be performed when indicated to determine whether cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes.

5. What Are the Main Treatment Options?

The main surgical choices are Breast Conserving Surgery (BCS) or mastectomy. For many patients undergoing BCS, radiation therapy is recommended after surgery to reduce the risk of cancer returning in the treated breast.

6. How Long Does Treatment & Recovery Take?

BCS is often performed as day-care or short-stay surgery, with many patients going home the same day or within 1–2 days. Recovery from the operation commonly takes 1–3 weeks, while additional cancer treatment may continue for several weeks or months.

7. What Are the Important Risks or Considerations?

BCS is an established treatment for appropriately selected breast cancer patients. Published evidence shows that breast-conserving surgery followed by appropriate radiation therapy provides long-term survival comparable to mastectomy for many early-stage breast cancers. Possible complications include infection, bleeding, changes in breast shape and the need for additional surgery if cancer cells remain at the surgical margin.
