Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)

Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)

UFE is a minimally invasive procedure that blocks the blood supply to uterine fibroids, causing them to shrink. It can reduce heavy bleeding, pelvic pressure, and fibroid-related symptoms while preserving the uterus.

Overview

1. What is Uterine Fibroid Embolization?
Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE), also called Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE), is a minimally invasive procedure that reduces the blood supply to fibroids, causing them to shrink over time.

2. When is UFE recommended?
UFE may be considered for women with symptomatic uterine fibroids causing heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, pelvic pressure or pain, urinary or bowel symptoms, or an enlarged abdomen, particularly when medication has not provided adequate relief.

3. How is UFE performed?
An interventional radiologist introduces a thin catheter through an artery, usually in the wrist or groin, and guides it to the uterine arteries. Small embolic particles are then released to reduce blood flow to the fibroids.

4. What types of fibroids can UFE treat?
UFE can treat multiple fibroids of different sizes and locations, including intramural and submucosal fibroids in selected patients. Detailed imaging is important because certain fibroid characteristics may make other treatments more appropriate.

5. What tests are required before UFE?
Evaluation may include pelvic ultrasound and, when needed, pelvic MRI to assess the number, size, location, and characteristics of fibroids. Blood tests and gynecological evaluation are also commonly performed before treatment.

6. How long does UFE take?
The embolization procedure commonly takes around 1–2 hours. Some patients require overnight observation, while others may be discharged after a shorter period depending on pain control and overall recovery.

7. What are the benefits of UFE?
UFE can reduce heavy menstrual bleeding and fibroid-related pain or pressure and gradually shrink fibroids. It avoids removal of the uterus and generally involves a shorter recovery than open fibroid surgery.

8. What are the risks and recovery?
Cramping and pelvic pain are common during the first few days. Other possible complications include fever, nausea, infection, premature ovarian dysfunction, passage of fibroid tissue, and, rarely, the need for additional treatment or hysterectomy. Recovery varies, but many patients resume normal activities within about 1–2 weeks.

9. Why consider India for UFE?
India has experienced interventional radiologists and gynecological centres offering image-guided minimally invasive treatments for fibroids, supported by advanced MRI and ultrasound facilities and multidisciplinary care at comparatively competitive costs.

10. How can Medavelle help?
Medavelle can coordinate medical-record and imaging review, identify an appropriate interventional radiology and gynecology centre, obtain an indicative treatment plan and quotation, and assist with hospital and travel coordination for international patients.

FAQs

No. UFE blocks the blood supply to the fibroids, causing them to shrink gradually. The fibroids remain in the uterus but generally become smaller and less symptomatic.
