Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty
Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty are minimally invasive procedures used to stabilize painful vertebral compression fractures. They can reduce pain and, in selected cases, restore vertebral height and improve spinal stability.

Overview
1. What are Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty?
Both procedures are minimally invasive treatments for selected vertebral compression fractures. Bone cement is injected into the fractured vertebra to stabilize it and reduce pain. Kyphoplasty additionally uses a balloon to create a cavity and may restore some vertebral height before cement placement.
2. When are these procedures recommended?
They may be considered for painful vertebral compression fractures that have not improved adequately with conservative treatment. They can be used for selected osteoporotic fractures and certain vertebral fractures related to cancer or other conditions.
3. What is the difference between Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty?
In vertebroplasty, cement is injected directly into the fractured vertebra. In kyphoplasty, a balloon is first inserted and inflated to create a cavity and potentially restore some vertebral height before the cavity is filled with bone cement.
4. How is the procedure performed?
Using imaging guidance, the surgeon or interventional specialist introduces a needle or specialized instrument through the skin into the affected vertebra. Bone cement is then carefully injected to stabilize the fracture. Kyphoplasty includes the additional balloon step.
5. What tests are required before treatment?
Evaluation commonly includes X-rays and MRI or CT scans to confirm the fracture, determine its age and characteristics, and exclude conditions that may require different treatment. Bone-density testing and blood investigations may also be recommended when osteoporosis is suspected.
6. How long does the procedure take?
Treatment of a single vertebral level commonly takes around 1 hour, although multiple levels or complex cases may require longer. Many patients can return home the same day or after a short period of observation.
7. What are the benefits of Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty?
In appropriately selected patients, these procedures can provide significant pain relief, improve mobility, reduce dependence on pain medication, and stabilize the fractured vertebra. Kyphoplasty may also improve vertebral body height and spinal alignment in selected fractures.
8. What are the risks and complications?
Potential complications include cement leakage, nerve or spinal cord compression, infection, bleeding, new vertebral fractures, and, rarely, cement-related complications involving the lungs or blood vessels. Careful patient selection and imaging guidance help reduce these risks.
9. Why consider India for Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty?
India has specialized spine and interventional pain centres with experienced spine surgeons, neurosurgeons, interventional radiologists, advanced imaging guidance, and minimally invasive spinal procedures at comparatively competitive treatment costs.
10. How can Medavelle help?
Medavelle can coordinate medical-record and imaging review, identify an appropriate spine specialist and hospital, obtain an indicative treatment plan and quotation, and assist with hospital and travel coordination for international patients.
