TAVR

TAVR

TAVR replaces a diseased aortic valve through a catheter rather than conventional open-heart surgery. It can provide effective valve replacement with a less invasive approach and faster recovery for appropriately selected patients.

Overview
  • What is TAVR?
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), also called TAVI, is a minimally invasive procedure used to replace a diseased aortic valve. A replacement valve is delivered through a catheter and positioned inside the existing valve.
  • When is TAVR recommended?
TAVR is primarily used for significant aortic stenosis and may be considered for patients at different surgical-risk levels depending on age, anatomy, life expectancy, existing medical conditions, and the heart team's assessment.
  • How is TAVR performed?
The replacement valve is usually introduced through an artery in the groin (transfemoral approach). Other access routes may be considered when the femoral arteries are unsuitable. The new valve expands within the diseased valve and begins functioning immediately.
  • What tests are required before TAVR?
Evaluation commonly includes echocardiography, CT angiography to assess the aortic valve and vascular anatomy, ECG, blood tests, and assessment of kidney function and overall surgical risk. A multidisciplinary heart team determines suitability.
  • What types of valves are used?
TAVR valves are generally either balloon-expandable or self-expanding. Valve selection depends on the patient's anatomy, aortic root dimensions, vascular access, age, associated conditions, and the treating team's assessment.
  • How long does the procedure and recovery take?
The procedure itself commonly takes around 1–2 hours, although this varies. Hospital stay may be relatively short in uncomplicated cases, and recovery is generally faster than conventional surgical aortic valve replacement.
  • What are the benefits of TAVR?
TAVR can improve symptoms such as breathlessness, fatigue, chest discomfort, and reduced exercise tolerance caused by severe aortic stenosis. Compared with open surgery, it generally involves a smaller access site and less invasive recovery.
  • What are the risks and complications?
Potential complications include bleeding or vascular injury, stroke, infection, heart rhythm disturbances requiring a pacemaker, kidney injury, valve leakage, valve malposition, and rarely life-threatening complications. Individual risk varies considerably.
  • Why consider India for TAVR?
India has advanced cardiac centres offering TAVR with experienced interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, advanced imaging, modern catheterization laboratories, and access to internationally used transcatheter valve systems.
  • How can Medavelle help?
Medavelle can coordinate medical-record review, identify an appropriate cardiac centre, obtain a treatment recommendation and indicative quotation, and assist with hospital and travel coordination for international patients.

FAQs

Neither approach is universally better. The choice depends on age, surgical risk, valve anatomy, life expectancy, other medical conditions, and patient preferences. A specialized heart team should determine the most appropriate option.
