Heart Bypass Surgery

Heart Bypass Surgery

Heart Bypass Surgery, medically known as Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG), is a surgical procedure used to improve blood flow to the heart muscle when the coronary arteries are significantly narrowed or blocked. The surgeon creates a new route for blood to flow around the blocked arteries.

Overview

1. What is Heart Bypass Surgery?

CABG creates a new pathway for blood to reach the heart muscle by using a healthy blood vessel taken from another part of the body, such as the chest, arm or leg, to bypass the blocked coronary artery.

2. When is it Recommended?

It may be recommended for patients with severe coronary artery disease, particularly when there are multiple significant blockages, left main coronary artery disease, complex coronary anatomy or when angioplasty and stenting are not the most appropriate treatment.

3. What Symptoms May a Patient Notice?

Coronary artery disease may cause chest pain or pressure (angina), shortness of breath, fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance or sweating. Some patients may have no obvious symptoms before a heart attack.

4. What Does the Treatment Involve?

During CABG, the surgeon uses one or more healthy blood vessels as grafts to bypass blocked coronary arteries. The surgery may be performed using a heart-lung machine or, in selected patients, without it.

5. What Are the Main Treatment Options?

Depending on the patient's coronary anatomy and clinical condition, options may include medication, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with angioplasty and stenting, or CABG. The heart team determines the most appropriate approach.

6. How Long Does Treatment & Recovery Take?

CABG commonly takes around 3–6 hours. Hospitalisation is generally around 5–10 days, including time for postoperative monitoring. Recovery typically takes 6–12 weeks, although full recovery may take longer.

7. What Are the Important Risks or Considerations?

CABG is a major cardiac operation. Possible complications include bleeding, infection, abnormal heart rhythms, stroke, kidney problems, heart attack and complications related to anaesthesia. Long-term management of cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, smoking and other risk factors remains important.

8. Why Consider Treatment in India?

India has specialised cardiac surgery centres performing complex and multi-vessel CABG, including arterial grafting and selected minimally invasive approaches, supported by experienced cardiac surgeons and dedicated cardiac intensive-care teams.

9. How Can Medavelle Help?

Medavelle can assist with coronary angiography and cardiac report review, cardiologist and cardiac surgeon coordination, hospital selection, bypass planning, international patient arrangements and postoperative cardiac rehabilitation coordination.

FAQs

No. Some patients can be effectively treated with medicines or Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI). CABG is considered when the extent or complexity of coronary disease makes surgery more appropriate.
