Bentall Surgery
Bentall Surgery is a complex open-heart procedure that replaces the aortic valve and aortic root, and when necessary, the nearby ascending aorta. It is commonly performed for significant aortic root disease, including aortic root aneurysm with a diseased aortic valve.

Overview
1. What is Bentall Surgery?
The Bentall procedure replaces the diseased aortic valve and aortic root with a specially designed valved conduit, after which the coronary arteries are reconnected to the new aortic root.
2. When is it Recommended?
It may be recommended for significant aortic root aneurysm, aortic root enlargement with aortic valve disease, aortic dissection, or certain inherited conditions affecting the aorta, depending on the patient's anatomy and risk.
3. What Symptoms May a Patient Notice?
Some patients have no symptoms. When symptoms occur, they may include chest or upper-back pain, breathlessness, tiredness, dizziness, palpitations or reduced exercise capacity.
4. What Does the Treatment Involve?
The surgeon removes the diseased aortic root and valve, replaces them with a valved conduit, and reconnects the coronary arteries to the new graft.
5. What Are the Main Treatment Options?
The replacement can use a mechanical or biological valve. In selected patients with suitable anatomy, other valve-preserving or aortic root procedures may be considered instead of a Bentall procedure.
6. How Long Does Treatment & Recovery Take?
Bentall surgery is a major open-heart procedure. Hospitalisation commonly takes around 7–14 days or longer, depending on recovery. Full recovery generally takes several weeks to a few months.
7. What Are the Important Risks or Considerations?
Bentall surgery has established long-term outcomes. A PubMed study of 217 patients reported 1.38% operative mortality and 93% survival at seven years. Outcomes vary according to the underlying aortic disease, valve condition, age and overall health.
8. Why Consider Treatment in India?
India has specialised cardiac centres performing complex aortic root and valve surgery, supported by experienced cardiac surgeons, advanced imaging, cardiac intensive-care units and multidisciplinary heart teams.
9. How Can Medavelle Help?
Medavelle can assist with medical report review, cardiologist and cardiac surgeon coordination, hospital selection, treatment planning, international patient arrangements and follow-up coordination.
