Arterial Switch Operation (ASO)

1. What is Arterial Switch Operation (ASO)?
ASO is a heart surgery performed mainly in newborns with TGA, in which the major arteries are switched back to their correct positions to restore normal blood circulation.

2. When is it Recommended?
It is primarily recommended for babies born with Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA), where the major arteries connected to the heart are reversed. Other associated heart abnormalities may influence the treatment plan.

3. What Symptoms May a Baby Show?
Babies with TGA may develop bluish or grey skin (cyanosis), rapid breathing, difficulty feeding, poor weight gain, extreme tiredness or low oxygen levels soon after birth.

4. What Does the Treatment Involve?
During surgery, the surgeon switches the aorta and pulmonary artery to their correct positions and carefully reattaches the coronary arteries to the new aortic position.

For suitable newborns with TGA, the arterial switch operation is the standard surgical approach. Before surgery, some babies may require medicines or a balloon atrial septostomy to improve oxygen circulation.
